Know your moon - know your comfort zone (and how to stretch beyond it)
Astro 101: How your moon sign and placement will tell you what you need to feel nourished, but also how to expand into new levels of strength and power
I'd like to introduce this piece by saying this is an offshoot of my usual Substack writing. If you did not sign up for astrology-related content, don't worry - nothing has changed! I'm simply adding in another facet of my work and interests, but the other life coaching-related content will still be the main focus in this space. If you are not interested in astrology, you can simply bypass the posts that begin with Astro 101 🙂
Thank you for being here, and for those of you who are astro-curious I hope you find this enlightening!
When I imagine what the ancients used to think of when they looked up to the sky, I think about how much power they gave to the Sun and the Moon.
The Sun was (and obviously still is) the ultimate life-force and generative creator. The greatest power to be harnessed. We can still easily feel this today when we experience dips in our energy on cloudy and rainy days, or in the winter months when the sunlight only stretches out for a few hours. The Sun is our greatest, friendliest, most energizing, and (sometimes) most forceful companion. I can only imagine in a world devoid of technology and sky scrapers and today’s daily comforts, this would be felt exponentially.
The Moon, on the other hand, was an energy more subtle. It’s almost curious in how it shrinks and swells day-to-day, quickly migrating from one section of the sky to the next. It can be delicate or indescribable in how it affects us, but at the same time it’s the fastest moving body of light we can observe – which indicates the ephemerality of time, and how easily we can gain or lose something.
“I feel a little like the moon who took possession of you for a moment and then returned your soul to you."
― Anaïs Nin, Delta of Venus
1. The Moon - Generally
The Moon has always been considered a gentle guide and nurturer. In astrology it’s the luminary most affiliated with the archetype of the mother and the womb – with every one of us having been born as light out of the darkness.
The Moon reflects our body, our nourishment, and how we access our resources. It reflects to us how we care for ourselves, what and who we make space for, how we digest and integrate our experiences, and the emotions that come along with it all.
Most interestingly (to me at least), the Moon represents our daily rhythms and rituals. Because it changes signs every 2-2.5 days, and is always growing fuller and more lean, there is a beat to which we can follow from it’s course through the sky, and as it cycles through the entire zodiac every 28 days.
From all of this symbolism (and so much more that I’m leaving out for the sake of the length of this article), the Moon is an indicator of how we must go about our daily lives to achieve what we’ve set out to accomplish.
Without nourishing our bodies, without understanding the language of our emotions, without integrating our food and experiences, without allowing ourselves to rest and recharge – none of what we’re here to do in this lifetime (as indicated by the Sun) will be made manifest.
“The moon does not fight. It attacks no one. It does not worry. It does not try to crush others. It keeps to its course, but by its very nature, it gently influences. What other body could pull an entire ocean from shore to shore? The moon is faithful to its nature and its power is never diminished.”
― Deng Ming-Dao, Everyday Tao: Living with Balance and Harmony
2. The Moon - Personally
Simply speaking, you can look to your personal moon sign and placement to learn what it is you uniquely require to feel nourished every single day.
Stating this again because it’s important – when you take care of your body and energy through authentic and intentional daily practices, your mind will function more optimally, you can move with clarity, and you’re more able to guide your life with assurance in your purposeful direction.
Tending to your moon is akin to watering a plant and placing it in sunlight – there’s a balance to how much you require, but if you don’t get these essential nutrients you won’t be able to thrive (or even survive).
If you speak with an astrologer or seek astrological information, you will readily find information delineating your metaphorical water and sunlight.
What you will less likely find, however, are the details describing your Moon sign as an indication of where you are being asked to stretch yourself.
If our moon placements are representations of what we require to feel supported and nourished, then they also indicate where our growth edges lay – where we start to feel uncomfortable, squeamish, and what we have a tendency to avoid. They are clear indications of where we feel the necessary friction that expands us into new levels of growth and maturity.
If you consider the truth – that when we stay in our comfort zones we continue only living a life within our bubble of comfort – it becomes clear that by consciously and intentionally moving into spaces of discomfort we will live a life of expansion, growth, and greater capacity.
No shade to the folks that want to live in a bubble of comfort, but I think we can all agree that life will likely throw you challenges and lessons to stretch you anyway – so wouldn’t it be nice to know what you’re likely going want to avoid in the process? And perhaps be prepared?
"It is no secret that the Moon has no light of her own but is, as it were, a mirror, receiving brightness from the influence of the Sun."
- Vitruvius
3. Application
Here’s the fun stuff :)
Below I’m including a brief description of moon placements by sign and then by house – the things each placement (aka you) requires to feel safe, secure and nourished along with where each is being asked to stretch.
You can look to your natal chart to see where your personal moon placement is, and then reference this list for an explanation.
I just want to note that theres are non-exhaustive descriptions, and this will change depending on the aspects your moon makes to other planets and points in your chart. If you’d like to learn the full extent of your personal moon placement, I recommend that you book a reading with me.
3A. Moon by Sign
Aries Moon:
For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to allow space daily to follow your inspiration and let some things be impulsive. Do something every day that scares you a little. Will need to stretch via:
Holding tension and making space for details and reflection, rather than diving right into following the impulse. There are times when you need to learn the importance of slowing down, particularly with regards to self-expression and emotions. In these moments ask yourself – What would make me feel safe enough to slow down? What would I gain from asking more questions?
Taurus Moon:
For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to follow your own timing and go at a pace that feels luxurious and grounding. Give yourself something every day that feels like a treat. Will need to stretch via:
Not always being in the most comfortable environments, or around people who make you feel comfortable. There are times when you won’t be able to have it your way, and you will need to navigate situations with people that challenge your stubborn perspectives. In these moments ask yourself - How am I being asked to explore a new viewpoint or experience? What am I experiencing that feels new and how can I make it feel more familiar?

For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to create time and space to follow your curiosity. Let yourself go down rabbit holes, or jump around through 100 stories. Chat or write out your feelings a little every day. Will need to stretch via:
Staying focused on one task, one subject, or one note to follow. You will expand your capacity for growth and change by staying consistent with a goal or activity you set out for yourself, and not letting yourself be pulled in new directions because you feel like it. In these moments ask yourself - Is it possible to go deeper to expand my interest in this direction? What would happen if I shifted my dialogue to within myself?
Cancer Moon:
For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to get into flow state daily - become immersed in projects, experiences, and conversations. Cleanse your feelings with journaling, baths, free movement, or reiki. Will need to stretch via:
Learning more about the language of your emotions, particularly if they are difficult or heavy. There will be experiences where you will physically feel uncomfortable and unsafe, even from an instinctual level. For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to do something every day that feels entirely like you - not what someone tells you to do, but something entirely for yourself. Put yourself on a pedestal with some daily self care. Will need to stretch via:
Sacrificing your perspective for the sake of fully empathizing with others. There will be times when your personal experience will not be needed to be shared, and you will need to fully step out of the equation to allow others to shine and feel seen. In these moments ask yourself - What do I always have within me that reminds me of my power? How can I expand my definition of what it means to be appreciated and seen?
Virgo Moon:
For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to do something with your hands. Explore the details of what it takes to create via your emotional experience. Tinkering, cooking, gardening, drawing, crafting, sculpting, writing, making...Will need to stretch via:
Not knowing all the details, and not always feeling grounded. There will be experiences and people that don’t offer you the information you like to have to help you feel in control and fully aware. In these moments ask yourself - What do I trust when I don’t have full control? How can I ground and anchor into uncertainty?
Libra Moon:
For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to look at art, put yourself in the way of beauty, move in ways that bring you into balance. Ask yourself every day what would feel harmonious.
Will need to stretch via:
Interpersonal conflict and socially uncomfortable situations. People will not get along all the time, and you will not always find yourself in the most obviously harmonious and beautiful circumstances. In these moments ask yourself - What resolution needs to be found to help reestablish balance? What am I honestly being asked to witness, and how can I find the beauty in it?
Scorpio Moon:
For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to move authentically. Follow only the practices that you know work for you - don’t waste your time on anything else. Bonus if it involves water, sweating, or screaming. Will need to stretch via:
Doing the deep inner reflective work, especially when you don’t feel like it, and learning what trust truly means to you. You might find yourself settling into places of stagnancy and repetition, or you may find yourself surrounded by people or environments that keep you fixed. In these moments ask yourself - What do I need to accept that perhaps I’m not fully looking at or seeing? How can I trust myself even if I don’t trust this other person or experience?
Sagittarius Moon:
For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to follow your instincts, and trust they will lead you to what you need. Spend a little time every day asking your spirit what it wants - and then give it to yourself. Will need to stretch via:
Not always being able to or not always having the resources to support your ability to go with the flow, follow your impulses, or move about freely. You may be forced to stay in one place, or go along with the needs of others and their emotions. In these moments ask yourself - What wisdom can I gain from allowing myself to be fully present? How does grounding into this person or experience help me to discover truth and expansion I may have overlooked?
Capricorn Moon:
For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to do the grounding practices that also feel productive - anything that helps you emotionally feel like you’re moving forward. Choose the practices that stretch your edges but also fill your cup. Will need to stretch via:
Not always knowing where you’re going or how to get where you want to go. You may encounter people or experiences that are disordered, flighty, and impulsive, with no clear purpose or direction. In these moments ask yourself - What would not having a structure offer in terms of my long term growth? What would it feel like to feel safe enough to go with the flow and let go a little?
Aquarius Moon:
For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to do what makes you feel free. Carve out time every day to do exactly what you want to do based on your own rules. Let it be as weird as you want. Will need to stretch via:
Not always having the answers, and having to deepen into your emotions. You will likely encounter people and experiences that lack integrity, regard for the collective, and inventive or expansive thinking. In these moments - What is my body telling me that it needs right now, and how can I give it to myself? What do I feel is true for myself, even if it’s not true for everybody?
Pisces Moon:
For nourishment & alignment:
Your moon wants you to get lost in your imagination. Read fiction, stare at the sky, day dream, lose yourself in your favorite music. Zone out for a bit so you can zone back in more emotionally clear. Will need to stretch via:
Having to focus on the details, move at a pace that feel unfamiliar, and be pragmatic. You might encounter people and situations that force you to make decisions sooner than you want to, and to be more focused on the material details that feels comfortable. In these moments ask yourself - What feels creative about making a choice that I’m not positive about? How can I feel safe in myself even when I don’t feel safe enough to be entirely relaxed and open?
In addition to the quality of experiences and people that you will feel nourished and stretched by, there are environments and life experiences that likely allow you to feel more at home, and others that make you feel less at ease. The spaces and places of less-ease are again asking you to find comfort outsize of your comfort zone, and they can be found via the house your personal moon resides in.

Woah mine are so spot on
This is AMAZING! I’ve been having such an interesting journey into embracing my moon this year (after realizing I’d typed my bday in wrong to an app years ago and thought I was a Gemini moon but actually a cancer 🙊) so this is so timely and helpful
