How to follow your life themes year by year
Astro 101: How to use the astrological timing technique of profection years
My younger cousin and I have this great tradition where every year on her birthday we travel somewhere new together. We started this when she first came out to New York for her 21st birthday, and we've carried on the ritual every year since. It makes me so happy as a somewhat older only-child to feel like I have a little sister to explore the world and create memories with.
When she turned 23, we went on an ultra cute week of adventure all over Quintana Roo - filled with lots of driving and mini road trips to little towns outside the major destinations. As any good astrologer-cousin would, on one of our drives I started describing to her the kinds of themes she was likely to expect in her year ahead, based on the astrology of the the moment and how it was aspecting her birth chart.
At one point she said to me, “I saw this video on TikTok that basically said year 23 is supposed to be super depressing. Like one of the worst years of your life.”
I laughed because I knew exactly why this TikTok-er made this claim, and also why they chose to add in this kind of hilarious drama in hopes of making the video go viral.
In astrology, year 23 equates to a 12th house profection year, and since the 12th house is often related to hidden enemies, retreat, isolation, imprisonment, and institutions (among many other much more positive things this content creator chose to leave out!) it could easily be sold as a scary year.
But of course, that's not the full story – of the 12th house or why each year of our life brings different themes, energies, areas of life we can expect to explore.
1/5 What is a profection year?
First let me just say that there are seemingly millions of timing techniques used in astrology, to the point where you might go mad trying to layer all the different perspectives of your current quality of time.
Think stacking multiple kaleidoscope images on top of one another and trying to find visual order - it's similar.
So rather than going into all the history of why profection year timing exists, I'm just going to tell you what is it, what it means, and how to use it.
When you look at your natal chart, you'll see a circle cut into 12 pie slices (don't use CoStar, use Astro.com). Each of these slices corresponds to what's called a house. Each house corresponds to different areas of life.
For example the 1st house contains you, your direction in life, your general approach, your understanding of your identity, and in many ways your body. The 2nd house contains your money, resources, valuable assets, inner talents, sense of self-worth, etc.
See the below chart of the houses and what each house “owns.”
The house numbers are in gold.
In Hellenistic astrology (the lineage of astrological study that I follow), every house is assigned a zodiac sign - starting with your rising sign in the first house, and then moving in counter-clockwise sequential order all the way around the circle.
See below an example chart with Aries rising (Aries on the 1st house).
Profection year timing attributes every year of life to each of these houses. So when you're in your first year of life (0-12 mos), you're in a 1st house profection year. Second year, 2nd house profection year. Third year, 3rd house, etc, etc. This continues around and around as a spiral taking you through each house, and every 12 years you begin at the first house to start the cycle all over again - with added layers of wisdom and experience, of course.
I personally believe this is an example of how growth is cyclical, and not linear.
PRACTICAL PERSONALIZATION
What age are you, and what profection year house are you in?
Based on this information, what areas of life are your current focus?
2/5 What does this mean?
If you take my cousin as an example – when she turned 23 years old she entered into a 12th house profection year, and all the areas of life the 12th house owns were the themes and areas of life she likely had a heightened experience of, until she turned 24.
No matter who you are, or what your birth chart looks like, when you’re 23, you're in a 12th house profection year. So if my cousin had a friend who was also 23, they'd both be in a 12th house profection year and likely be exploring the same areas of life.
The difference, however, is that everyone will have a different zodiac sign that rules their 12th house. So if my cousin is a Cancer rising, that means Gemini would be on her 12th house, and Gemini would be the style in which she experiences her 12th house themes. If her friend was an Aries rising, then Pisces would be on their 12th house, and Pisces would be the style in which they would experience 12th house themes. This could make for a very different lived experience between the two of them.
PRACTICAL PERSONALIZATION
What sign is on your current profection year house?
What are the key words that describe the style of this sign?
3/5 How do I apply this to my life, and why use this technique?
If you haven't already answered the questions in each of the above sections, here are the practical steps to apply this information to your own life:
To start, you have to know what age you are (which I hope is information that comes readily to you), and then you have to identify which house that age corresponds to. (use the Profection Year chart above)
Once you've identified which house is applied to your age, you can now identify which life themes are heightened and prominent for you this year (use the Astrological Houses chart above)
Then, using your natal chart, identify which zodiac sign is on the house assigned your age. This is the energy you will likely experience more of this year, especially when coming into contact with the areas of life and themes the house owns. (use the Zodiac Signs chart above)
You can garner a lot from this information alone, right?
For example, I'm about to enter a 1st house profection year (age 36) and Sagittarius is on my 1st house (aka my rising sign/ascendant). So I know that my themes for the year ahead are going to be themes of embracing my identity, stepping into a new version of myself (1st house) after a 12th house year that was full of isolation, release and reflection. And I know my year ahead will all be filled with the energy of generosity, joviality, optimism and truth-seeking (Sagittarius).
That's definitely enough for me to work with and think about for my next year of life - especially when it comes to things to look out for, ways to plan my business, and predicting how I'll likely be showing up in the world.
I personally love using this technique to make sense of why things are currently unfolding the way they are. This last year of 35 has been pretty isolating - I've spent a lot of time in my house outside the city, I've felt the need to retreat from too many social spaces and recoup my energy, and I've been doing a lot of internal excavation work to clarify my unconscious behavioral patterns, old and outdated beliefs, and generally getting rid of lots of things (physical and internal) that I don't identify with anymore. This is all very Scorpio energy on the 12th house - just before a big Sagittarius 1st house year.
PRACTICAL PERSONALIZATION
How would you synthesize your answer to the above questions? If you reflect on the year you're in, or your previous year of life, what feels applicable based on the information you gathered above?
INTERMISSION
Like all things in astrology, there's a few more layers you can add to this technique.
But before I continue - if the above information is already taking a sec to land in your brain - stop right here. Come back to these last sections once you've fully made sense of and explored the information above.
Astrology often requires a lot of integration in order for us to really know how to work with it, so if the above info was enough of a mind stretch - take a break.
If you're feeling solid with the information above - feel free to keep reading!

4/5 Your “time-lord”
The second to last layer of profection years (that is perhaps the most key, and the most unique to each year), is the understanding of your time-lord.
Why they decided to call it a time-lord is proof that astrology is truly ancient and in many ways archaic, but we're going to keep up the tradition.
Your time-lord is the planet that rules the zodiac sign that is on the house of your current year.
So for example, I'm entering a Sagittarius year so my time-lord will be Jupiter. If you're in an Aries year, your time-lord will be Mars.
See the chart below for all the signs and their planetary rulers.
During your year ahead, the transits your time-lord (aka ruling planet of the year) moves through in the sky will impact you more than it will others.
So if your time-lord is Mercury for your year ahead, every time Mercury retrogrades or makes a major aspect to another planet, you're really going to feel the energetic shift. Additionally, whatever houses Mercury transits through in your chart will become heightened themes you'll be paying attention to.
Knowing your time-lord is helpful because it tells you the additional layers of life you'll be navigating.
Taking myself as an example again – because my time-lord for my 36th year will be Jupiter, I want to pay attention to what Jupiter will be doing in the sky from July 9, 2025-July 8, 2026 (the entirety of my 36th year). I know that Jupiter will be in Cancer for a big part of the year, and Cancer is on my 8th house in my natal chart. This means that in addition to it being a 1st house profection year, I will also be experiencing an added layer of 8th house themes.
PRACTICAL PERSONALIZATION
What is your current time-lord planet? What sign is this planet in right now (you can look this up here)? What house is this currently activating for you in your natal chart? What are the themes associated with this house, and are you currently exploring these themes in your lived experience?
5/5 What about the planets in my natal chart?
The very last layer to understanding profection years is recognizing what (if any) planets are in the house of your current profection year. Those planets will also add to the energy of your year ahead.
So let's say you're a Virgo moon, and you're entering a Virgo profection year - that means the qualities of the moon (your body, emotions, daily experiences, memory, etc) will also be a major area of focus and will add to the way in which you interpret your themes of the year ahead.
Using this same example, in addition to whatever themes of the house your profection year is activating, you will likely interpret and experience those themes more via the qualities of the moon – your body, your emotions, your daily experience and your memories. And particularly through the energetic style of Virgo.
Because not all of us have planets in every house (and that's completely normal), not every profection year will be filtered through the lens of a natal planet. But for the years that are, see below for what to expect:
PRACTICAL PERSONALIZATION
Take a look at your natal chart. Do you have any planets in your current profection year house? If so, what are they telling you about the lens through which you'll experience your themes of the year?
In summary
Profection years are a highly valuable timing technique that helps us understand the overarching themes of our lives year by year. Not only can we use them to make sense of our current year of life, but also years in the past and years in the future. We can prepare ourselves to know what to expect in our developmental growth, but we can also observe how the energy of the planets is encouraging us to unfold into the journey of our lives.
In quick summation:
Profection year house: the setting of your year ahead story
Zodiac sign that rules the profection year house: the energetic style of your year ahead story
Time-lord: the director of your year ahead
Time-lord transits: the scene dynamics within your story
Natal chart planets: the main characters moving through your year ahead story
